For many people, thinking of flowers usually invokes tulips popping from the ground, brought on by April’s showers or summer wild flowers in sun soaked meadows. Flowers are often a symbol of the renewal that spring gives or the carefree atmosphere of summer, but flowers can also bring joy and color to the most dreary of winters. Adding flowers to holiday home décor can brighten things and invite a more cheerful holiday mood into a house, making it a cheerful, colorful home.
Poinsettias have always been a favorite flower around Christmas time, with many churches and other organizations selling them as fund raisers or using them as decorations. The bold red of the flower and the crisp green of the stems and leaves are ideal for Christmas arrangements. While poinsettias are traditionally the most used Christmas Flower, there are a variety of other flowers that will compliment any home’s Christmas décor. Other red flowers, such as roses, carnations and chrysanthemums are great for Christmas themed centerpieces or other Christmas decorations. It usually helps to use white flowers such as lilies, white roses, white carnations, and white chrysanthemums to keep the reds from becoming too overbearing and helps give a crisp, winterly feel to the flower arrangements. While many summer and spring flower arrangements use baby’s breath as an accent, pine sprigs are great greenery for Christmas Flowers, and Christmas lights, pine cones and holly can also make the arrangement reflect the joy of the holidays.
Other innovative holiday decoration ideas might include a Christmas Gift Basket used as a centerpiece or a gift basket put on top of a counter or table. Gift baskets are usually beautifully packaged, so keeping them as in tact as much as possible will preserve their beauty while they are enjoyed. Christmas Gift Baskets can also be filled with holiday flowers or other decorations once their contents are consumed. Again, pine sprigs, pine cones, Christmas lights, and holly can be used to accent your arrangements and give them an uniquely Christmas feel.
With some planning and thought, there’s no reason why Christmas can’t be as green and colorful as spring or summer holidays. Adding some color and some more flowers to Christmas decorations can help make those gray winter days more cheerful and festive, and a bright, cheerful home always helps offset the usual holiday anxieties that many people get.
